Montelíbano is a Colombian municipality ( municipio ) in the department of Cordoba . The main town ( cabecera municipal ) is Montelíbano.

The diocese of Montelíbano is located in Montelíbano .

Population and geography

The municipality has an area of 1821 square kilometers and 88,674 inhabitants. Of these, 70,290 live in the urban part ( cabecera municipal ) and 17,232 in the rural part of the municipality (as of 2019).

The Río San Jorge can be found on the northern edge of the city . The only way to get to the other side from the city is by ferry. There are no bridges. Montelíbano is 114 km from Montería at an altitude of 50 m above sea level. NN and has an average temperature of 28 ° C. The municipality borders in the north on Planeta Rica , Buenavista and Ayapel , in the south on Puerto Libertador and San José de Uré as well as Tarazá , Cáceres and Ituango in Antioquia , in the east on La Apartada and in the west on Tierralta .

crime

In 2010, 83 murders were recorded in Montelíbano. In 2011 it was 58 until the end of August. This is one of the highest murder rates in the world. The reason for this is the bandas criminales (Spanish for “criminal gangs”; short: Bacrim ) that emerged from demobilized paramilitary groups . Because of the violence, among other things, there is a migration into the city.

There are poor neighborhoods on the southern edge of the city. These are growing rapidly due to the violence, which is particularly widespread in rural areas.
