The Río San Jorge is an approximately 500 km long left tributary of the Río Magdalena in Colombia .
River course
The Río San Jorge rises in the Western Cordillera at an altitude of about 2500 m . The headwaters are located a few kilometers north of the source of the Río Sinú and 10 km north of the 3730 m high Cerro Paramillo . The Río San Jorge initially flows about 130 km north through the mountains. He takes up the Río Sucio from the right. The upper reaches of the Río San Jorge lies in the Parque Nacional Natural Paramillo . At river kilometer 360 the Río San Jorge cuts through a mountain ridge running in north-south direction in an easterly direction and reaches the north Colombian lowlands, where it has a strongly meandering behavior, with numerous river loops and oxbow lakes . At river kilometer 325, 16 km northeast of the city of Puerto Libertador , the Río San Pedro flows into the Río San Jorge when coming from the south. 7 km downstream, the Río Uré , also coming from the south, meets the Río San Jorge. This now turns northeast over a distance of 50 km. He passes the cities of Montelíbano and La Apartada . The river then turns north. At river kilometer 125 the city of San Marcos is on the left bank of the river. In the lower reaches it flows through a swamp and lake landscape. Between river kilometers 70 and 60, the Río San Jorge runs through the lake Ciénaga de la Villa . 6.5 km above the confluence with the Río Magdalena, a smaller 4.5 km long estuary branches off to the right. The mouth of the larger left estuary is 9 km south of the city of Magangué .
The Río San Jorge flows through the departments of Antioquia , Córdoba , Sucre and Bolívar .
Catchment area
The catchment area covers an area of approximately 12,500 km². It borders on that of the Río Sinú to the west and that of the Río Cauca to the east . The discharge fluctuates between 24 and 697 m³ / s. The mean discharge is 380 m³ / s.
