Puerto Libertador is a municipality ( municipio ) in the department of Cordoba in Colombia .

geography

Puerto Libertador is located in the south of Córdoba at an altitude of 90 m above sea level. NN , 170 km from Montería . The area of the municipality is crossed by the rivers San Pedro and San Jorge as well as many smaller rivers. The municipality borders on Montelíbano to the north and west , Ituango in the Department of Antioquia to the south , and San José de Uré , Montelíbano and Tarazá in Antioquia to the east .

The municipality of Puerto Libertador has 53,990 inhabitants, of which 22,426 live in the urban part (cabecera municipal) of the municipality (as of 2019).

history

Puerto Libertador was founded in 1941 by settlers from Sahagún . Later other settlers from Antioquia joined them. The influence of the indigenous Zenú people who lived there before the arrival of the Spaniards can still be felt in the region. Puerto Libertador received the status of a municipality in 1980. Until then, the place had been a corregimiento of Montelíbano.
