Kill rate by country

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The statistics of the homicide rate by country (also known as homicide rate or homicide rate ) show the number of homicides per 100,000 inhabitants ( frequency ). The list is based on data from the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC for short) based in Vienna. The latest figures currently available (end of 2019) relate to 2017 or earlier. The killing rate is a meaningful indicator of a country's security level.

A homicide is defined by the UNODC as the willful death of one person as a result of the violent, wrongful act of another person. It is irrelevant here whether the intent was already killing or whether the victim was only intended to be injured. Attempted non-fatal killings are not included in the statistics. The killings statistically recorded by the UNODC do not include:

  • all acts of war or warlike nature,
  • fatal injuries in connection with official measures to maintain security
  • Suicides including active euthanasia
  • negligent homicides as well
  • Acts of self-defense resulting in death.

It is difficult to differentiate between politically motivated homicides (e.g. assassinations), which are included in the statistics, and acts of war or police activities, which are not counted. The UNODC definition is not binding in all countries; it can be handled differently in individual countries when collecting local data.

An international comparison of countries with warlike or warlike acts is difficult. Typically, crime rates drop during wars and resume the long-term pattern shortly afterwards.

The reliability of the underlying national data is unstable. Even the collection of the data can be incomplete. It cannot be ruled out that statistical reports are embellished in individual cases for political reasons. For individual countries, only estimates are available that are made, for example, on the basis of data from the World Health Organization (WHO). The general rule is that in the event of death, an intentional homicide is not always recognized. One has to assume that there is an unreported number and that the true number of homicides is higher. Nevertheless, a meaningful picture emerges in a country comparison.

  • Long-term trends show a drastic decline

The list below and the geographic distribution above show a snapshot. It should also be noted that homicides appear to be subject to a long-term, downward trend. There are no statistics for murders over centuries. However, there are recordings in different places at different times. In 2003, Cambridge professor Manuel Eisner published a study that summarizes such data. The graph below is based largely on Eisner's numbers. In addition, Our World in Data has made additions and updates. The values are given per 100,000 inhabitants per year ( frequency number ).

There has been a drastic decrease in murder rates since the end of the Middle Ages . Italy had historically above average numbers. Today, however, the values are at the level of northern European countries.

Results of the global UNODC study

According to the study (as of 2012), nearly half a million people (437,000) in the world lose their lives every year as a result of deliberate killing. The global kill rate is 6.2 per 100,000 people. Of the deaths, North, Central and South America accounted for 36% (rate 16.3), 31% in Africa (rate 12.5), 28% in Asia (rate 2.9) and 5% in Europe (rate 3 , 0) and 0.3% on Oceania (rate 3.0).

The figures for the development of the past are only available in fragments in the present UNODC statistics. For individual countries there are additional figures from the OECD for the last ten or twenty years . Overall, according to UNODC, the following picture emerges for the last five years: In Europe, North America and Asia, a slightly declining trend is predominantly discernible. The exception, however, is Eastern Europe. In Central and South America, the numbers in many countries remain at an unchanged high level. In Africa, an increase has been recorded in most regions, with southern Africa in some cases being an exception. The numerical basis for development in Africa is, however, incomplete.

Of the world population of around 7.1 billion people (as of 2012), 11% live in countries with a killing rate of 20 and more, while 41% of the world population lives in countries with a killing rate of 3 and less. The proportion of male victims is relatively high at 79%. It is noticeable that almost half of the victims were between the ages of 15 and 29. These two statistical abnormalities are largely present worldwide.

List of kill rates by country

The following figures mostly come from the UNODC study. For the last available reporting year (mostly 2012 to 2018), the table contains the number of homicides per 100,000 inhabitants and year ( frequency ), as well as the absolute number of homicides (number of homicides) per country . Countries are sorted according to the killing rate and, if the rate is identical, according to the number of kills. 210 countries and territories were recorded.

In El Salvador , which has been at the top of the list for several years , there has been a marked improvement for three years in a row, so that its rate fell from 103 in 2015 to 51 in 2018.
