Majagual is a municipality (municipio) in the department of Sucre in Colombia .
geography
Majagual is located in the south of Sucre , in the sub-region La Mojana on the Río Mojana , at an altitude of 25 m above sea level. NN and has an average annual temperature of 28 ° C. The municipality is bordered by Sucre to the north, Guaranda to the south, Achí in the Bolívar department to the east and San Benito Abad to the west and Ayapel in the Córdoba department .

history
In the area of today Majagual already lived at the Spanish arrived indigenous people of Zenú . The first white colonization movements in the region began in the 17th century and resulted in the permanent formation of settlements like Majagual in the 18th century. Majagual has had parish status since 1938.
economy
During the colonial period, sugar cane cultivation was the most important industry in the region. From the second half of the 19th century cocoa , corn , tobacco and rice were also grown. In addition, the importance of fishing , logging and mining grew . Since the beginning of the 20th century, Majagual was repeatedly affected by floods, which caused great poverty for the population, as large parts of the production were destroyed. Rice turned out to be the most resistant cultivation product, so that it subsequently caught on. In addition, animal husbandry and fishing are carried out today , and sorghum and corn are grown.
