Uribia is a municipality ( municipio ) in the department of La Guajira in Colombia . Uribia is close to the border with Venezuela . The Cabo de la Vela , a popular ecotourism destination in Colombia, is located in the municipality of Uribia .

geography

Uribia is located at an altitude of about 20 meters near the Colombian Caribbean coast in the north of the La Guajira department. Part of the municipality's territory is desert . The municipality is bordered by the Caribbean Sea to the north and east , Venezuela to the south, Maicao to the southwest and Manaure to the west .

Demographics

The municipality of Uribia has 198,890 inhabitants, of which only 14,088 live in the urban part (cabecera municipal) of the municipality (as of 2019). A large part of the population Uribias belongs to the indigenous people of the Wayúu to. The Resguardo Indígena de la Alta y Media Guajira indigenous reserve is located on the territory of the municipality .

history

Uribia was founded on March 1st, 1935 by Eduardo Londoño in the middle of the Wayúu territory . The place Chitki the Wayúu, which was known as the indigenous capital of Colombia, was previously located there. Uribia was named after the liberal general Rafael Uribe Uribe . The founding of the city was part of the attempt to incorporate the Wayúu, the Guajira, into the Colombian nation.

economy

Puerto Bolívar

The most important economic sectors in Uribia are animal husbandry (especially goats ), trade , tourism , processing of Divi-Divi and the export of coal and natural gas . The port of Puerto Bolívar , from which the coal from the El Cerrejón coal mine is exported, is located in the municipality of Uribia .
