The Cabo de la Vela is a cape on the northwest coast of the Guajira Peninsula in Colombia and is located in the northernmost area of South America . The Gulf of Darién stretches to the west and the Caribbean Sea to the north and east. The cape was discovered by Alonso de Ojeda and Juan de la Cosa in the early 16th century . In 1535, Nikolaus Federmann founded the first European village near the cape with the name Nuestra Señora Santa María de los Remedios del Cabo de la Vela . The desert region around the Cabo de la Vela is from the indigenous people of the Wayúu inhabited.

Cabo de la Vela is a popular ecotourism destination in Colombia.
