Gulf of Darién

The Gulf of Darién is a marginal sea of the Caribbean Sea . It is bounded by the northwest coast of Colombia and the north coast of the Isthmus of Panama . The most important coastal cities in Colombia are Cartagena and Barranquilla . The most important river is the Río Magdalena , which was so named during the conquest by the Spanish conquistadors of Rodrigo de Bastidas on April 1, 1501.

In 1509, the Spaniards founded San Sebastián de Urabá on the Gulf of Darién as the first fortress on the South American mainland.
