El Molino is a municipality ( municipio ) in the department of La Guajira in Colombia . El Molino is close to the border with Venezuela .

geography

The municipality of El Molino is located between the Serranía del Perijá , a northern branch of the Andes, and the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta . The parish borders clockwise with San Juan del Cesar , Venezuela and Villanueva .

The municipality of El Molino has 9,121 inhabitants, of which 6309 live in the urban part (cabecera municipal) of the municipality (as of 2019).

history

El Molino was probably founded in 1610 on the instructions of the governor of Santa Marta, Diego Fernández de Argote y Córdoba. The foundation is said to have been carried out by the encomendero Pedro Beltrán Valdez. During the Colombian struggle for independence, the battle of La Batalla del Sardá took place in the area of El Molino . In addition, in 1823 the place was declared the capital of the Spanish viceroyalty , which was in the process of being dissolved. Since 1989 El Molino has had the status of a municipality.

economy

The main industries in El Molino are commerce and agriculture . Among other things, corn , bananas , cassava , tomatoes , sorghum , beans , coffee , cotton and passion fruit are grown.
