La Jagua del Pilar is a municipality ( municipio ) in the department of La Guajira in Colombia . La Jagua del Pilar is close to the border with Venezuela . The name of the place refers, on the one hand, to the Jaguito tree, which is widespread in the region, and, on the other, to Our Lady on the Pillar , the patron saint of the place.

The municipality of La Jagua del Pilar is part of the Serranía del Perijá , a northern branch of the Andes . The highest point is the Cerro Pintao at 287 meters . The rest of the community is flat. The community borders in a clockwise direction on Urumita , Venezuela and on Manaure , La Paz Robles and Valledupar in the neighboring Cesar .

history

The place La Jagua del Pilar was founded in 1795 by Manuel José Fernández de Castro and Bartolo Ustariz. Until 1998 the place was a Corregimiento of Urumita , then it received the status of a municipality.

The main industries in La Jagua del Pilar are animal husbandry and agriculture . Among other things, cotton , corn , bananas and cassava are grown.
