Albania is a municipality ( municipio ) in the department of La Guajira in Colombia . Albania is close to the border with Venezuela .

geography

Albania is located at an altitude of about 60 meters near the Venezuelan border in the south of the La Guajira department . The municipality is located in the valley of the Ranchería River and in the Serranía del Perijá , a northern branch of the Andes . In addition, Albania has a share in the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta . The municipality borders Maicao to the north, Maicao and Venezuela to the east, Riohacha to the west, Hatonuevo to the southwest and Fonseca to the south .

The municipality of Albania has 28,474 inhabitants, of which 14,091 live in the urban part (cabecera municipal) of the municipality (as of 2019). Much of the community's population are Wayúu indigenous people .

history

Albania was founded in 1801 by indigenous groups. Since 1935 it was a corregimiento of Maicao . In 1937 the settlement got its current name Albania. She had previously been known as Calabacito. It was not until 2001 that Albania became its own municipality.

The economy of Albania is characterized by the many natural resources. The main industry in Albania is mining . Part of the El Cerrejón coal mine is located in the municipality . Limestone mining and oil extraction are also planned for the future .
