Pierre Abraham

Pierre Abraham , actually Pierre Abraham Bloch , (born March 1, 1892 in Paris ; † May 20, 1974 there ) was a French writer, journalist and Romance scholar .

life and work

Pierre Bloch, brother of the writer Jean-Richard Bloch , later took the author name Pierre Abraham. He graduated from the École polytechnique (and was an air force officer in World War I), but then turned (under the influence of his brother) as an author and critic of literature and self-taught the humanities. After his engagement in the Resistance , he was a city councilor in Nice from 1947 to 1959 . As a member of the French Communist Party , he headed the literary section of the Center for Marxist Research and Studies (Center d'études et de recherches marxistes, now Espaces Marx ), founded in 1960 .

Abraham was a collaborator (from the beginning) and editor (from 1949) of the magazine Europe (literary magazine) (founded in 1923 by Romain Rolland and his circle, to which Jean-Richard Bloch also belonged). He was succeeded by Pierre Gamarra as editor.
