Rosemarie Schwarzwälder (born December 7, 1945 in Basel ) is a Swiss gallery owner , art dealer and journalist. She is the owner of the gallery next St. Stephan in Vienna , which she made known worldwide through her program and her participation in international art fairs. It is not only about the presentation of the artists, but also about the discussion of current art movements and the reference to old cultures.

Live and act

Rosemarie Schwarzwälder attended the Basel Language and Business School and during this time came into contact with modern art through the Basel Art Museum . She started working for the PR agency Farner and worked for the Daniel Keel gallery in Zurich . In 1970 she moved to Vienna and worked for art magazines and Austrian radio. In 1978 she became the manager of the Galerie next St. Stephan, founded by Monsignore Otto Mauer . She has been the owner of the gallery since 1987.

1978-1983

Her main focus was initially on project-related exhibitions in combination with discussions, readings, performances and concerts (partly together with the Vienna Music Gallery ). The artists included u. a. Vito Acconci (1978), Joseph Beuys (1979), Terry Fox (1979) and Mario Merz (1983). A portrait of her became part of the photo series 'Le Grand Amour' by Jochen Gerz .

1984-1991

In 1984 the exhibition " Signs, Floods, Signals - Newly Constructive and Parallel" marked a reorientation of the gallery program by turning to geometric abstraction , minimal art and concept art . Imi Knoebel , Helmut Federle , Donald Judd , James Welling and Dan Flavin were shown for the first time in Austria in solo exhibitions. Austrian artists include Ernst Caramelle and Gerwald Rockenschaub . An essential part of Rosemarie Schwarzwälder's mediation work is to make comparisons of different positions in abstract art. This includes, for example, the exhibition Abstract Painting using the example of three European and three American painters in 1986.

In 1990 - in collaboration with Helmut Federle - works by contemporary abstract artists were juxtaposed with artefacts from ancient cultures from Asia and South America and debated in an art talk.

She was commissioned by Erste Bank Austria to build up an international collection of abstract painting, concept and minimal art.

Since 1992

In the years since 1992, the area of painting represented so far has been expanded to include younger positions, as have the areas of sculpture and installation. In the exhibition 'Art Fabric' textile works of art by contemporary artists were juxtaposed with handicraft textiles from other parts of the world.

The exhibition 'Word + Work' (2013) thematized artist works in relation to artist texts.
