Daniel Keel (born October 10, 1930 in Einsiedeln , † September 13, 2011 in Zurich ) was a Swiss publisher . He was the founder and active director of Diogenes Verlag until his death .

Life

Keel dropped out of high school and trained as a bookseller from 1947 to 1949. He founded Diogenes Verlag in 1952, initially as a one-man company. In 1954, his childhood friend Rudolf C. Bettschart (1930–2015) joined the company. The Diogenes Verlag was initially a cartoon publisher, the first title was a volume by the Englishman Ronald Searle . The book appeared under the title Because the lamp is still glowing .

In 1961 he founded the Daniel Keel gallery and in 1962 he married the painter Anna Keel , b. Diekmann (1940-2010). The younger son, Philipp (* 1968), took over the publishing activities at Diogenes in 2012, the older, Jakob, chairs its board of directors. Daniel Keel's brother, Othmar Keel, is a theologian, biblical and religious scholar and Egyptologist .

Diogenes Verlag publishes countless important authors such as B. Friedrich Dürrenmatt , Bernhard Schlink , Martin Suter , Paulo Coelho and numerous English-language crime writers such as Donna Leon , Dashiell Hammett and Patricia Highsmith . 5000 published titles by more than 800 writers and artists in more than 65 years of publishing history. Keel found his final resting place in the Fluntern cemetery in Zurich .
