Philipp Keel (* 1968 in Zurich ) is a Swiss artist, author, filmmaker and publisher .

Biographical

Philipp Keel was born as the son of the publisher Daniel Keel and the painter Anna Keel . Even in his childhood he had a strong interest in fine arts. As a teenager he became interested in photography. After studying piano at Berklee College of Music in Boston , Keel worked in Zurich for several years in the advertising industry. He then studied directing at the University of Television and Film Munich . Then he moved to Los Angeles . Here Keel established himself as an artist, filmmaker and author. He made a documentary about the Lakota-Sioux Indian tribe and wrote his book project All About Me , which became a bestseller. He experimented with various printing techniques and, together with other artists, developed the so-called Imbue Print technique, which flowed into his photographic work. His work is shown in exhibitions around the world.

In addition to his photographic work, Philipp Keel is also active in the visual arts, writing scripts and philosophical texts. In 2012 he succeeded his late father as the publisher of Diogenes Verlag .

Work and reception

Keel uses certain techniques to change what our eyes perceive. Through reduction, distortion or overvoltage, he asks the viewer what we are actually seeing. His recordings direct our gaze towards specific things. For example on the pulp of a melon, in which its structure can now be seen. In doing so, he pushes the degree of abstraction to the limit, at which the reception of the depicted remains possible in its reality, but at the same time the unreal opens up to the viewer.
