James Welling

James Welling (* 1951 in Hartford , Connecticut ) is an American photographer .

life and work

From 1969 to 1971 Welling studied at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh with Gandy Brodie , John Stevenson, Connie Fox and Robert Tharsing. He moved to the California Institute of the Arts and continued his studies with Wolfgang Stoerchle and John Baldessari until his master's (1971) . There he met Dan Graham , William Wegman and Joan Jonas , among others . Other close friends at Cal Arts included Marcia Resnick, Suzanne Lacy, David Salle and Matt Mullican . From 1995 to 2016, Welling was Head of Photography at the University of California, Los Angeles, and has been Visiting Professor of Photography at Princeton University since 2012 .

Welling works with various photographic materials, with Polaroids , Gelatin Silver Prints, photograms and digital prints .

Glass House (2009) is a well-known series by Welling. Over a period of three years he used color filters to photograph Philip Johnson's Glass House .

In 2014 Welling received the Infinity Award from the International Center of Photography , New York and in 2016 the Julius Shulman Institute Excellence Prize for Photography.
