David Salle (born September 28, 1952 in Norman , Oklahoma ) is an American artist who works with the media of painting and printmaking and as a set designer .

life and work

David Salle graduated from the California Institute of the Arts in Valencia, California in 1975 with an MFA . There he studied under John Baldessari . In his early work from the time of his studies Salle deals with video art and photography. He creates connections between photos and text. In the mid-1970s, Salle turned to painting and began to gain public interest for the first time in the 1980s.

Salle's painting of the 1980s can be classified as appropriation art : his work is characterized by numerous citations and acquisitions. He makes use of the art world as well as popular images from the mass media. Salle often depicts stereotypes. For example, Salle repeatedly uses photos from soft pornographic magazines and the daily press as a template. This combination of different motifs and the mixing of different styles, as well as the frequent lack of a clear picture order, often make the interpretation of Salle's paintings difficult. Salle can be described as a postmodern artist due to his quoting way of working and the use of well-known pictorial motifs .

David Salle is also involved in stage and costume design , and has designed many sets for the choreographer Karole Armitage . In 1995 he made the movie The Moviemaker , starring Griffin Dunne , Ethan Hawke , Dennis Hopper , John Turturro and Christopher Walken .
