Ricardo de León (born September 23, 1923 in Trinidad , † February 14, 2010 in Montevideo ) was a Uruguayan football player and coach .

Player career

society

José Ricardo de León Aroztegui began his football career in 1942 in the reserve teams of the Club Nacional de Football . In 1944 he received his first professional contract with Liverpool Montevideo and later continued his active career in Venezuela . He also played for the Venezuelan club Litoral Sport . In 1951 he was under contract with America.

National team

De León was also part of the Uruguayan senior team in 1950 as a substitute center forward and was among the extended circle of those who were nominated for the 1950 World Cup.

Coaching

De León began his coaching career in 1961 with the Uruguayan club Fénix . This was followed by a phase from 1962 to 1965 at his former club Nacional as an assistant coach. In 1969 and 1971 to 1973, he was active as a selection coach for the Florida and Soriano departmental teams . In 1974 he trained Defensor for the first time . In 1975 he was obliged by the Mexican first division club Atlético Español , with whom he immediately became runner-up. In the same year he joined Deportivo Toluca and won the Mexican championship with the club . This was followed by a coaching station at the Argentine club Rosario Central .

He then went back to his home country and took over Defensor again, with whom he won the Uruguayan championship title of 1976 thanks to his excellent defensive tactics . It was the first title of the Uruguayan professional league, introduced in 1932, that was not won by one of the two previously overpowering rivals Nacional or Peñarol . De León revolutionized Uruguayan football in a certain way, taking strategies from basketball and transferring them to the football game. He created a so-called "pressing with linear defense" by building blocks.

In 1980 he left Defensor for Olimpia. He was succeeded by Baudilio Jáuregui .

In 1981 he trained Deportes Tolima , in 1983 he was a trainer at Unión Magdalena . In 1984 he returned to the coaching chair at Defensor.
