The Nürburgring Classic is a motorsport competition for classic vehicles at the Nürburgring, which has been held since 2017 under the ideal sponsorship of the Düsseldorf Automobile and Motorsport Club 05 .

From 2005 to 2007 the event was organized by the ADAC Regional Club Nordrhein as the ADAC Nürburgring Classic .

history

The first ADAC Nürburgring-Classic, under the leadership of the ADAC Regional Club Nordrhein, was still a 2-day event and started on Saturday, October 1st, 2005.

In addition to the two main races, the 300 km race on the Nordschleife for touring cars and GTs and the ADAC Graf Berghe von Trips Cup race for formula vehicles, many regularity runs were started. The supporting program included a nostalgic fair, an exhibition of individual automobiles, a tractor and fire truck meeting and a brand club meeting.

In 2006 the event was expanded into a 3-day event and ran from September 22nd to 24th. The tractor and tractor meeting in 2006 attracted over 400 participants. The sporting highlight, the endurance race for historic touring cars and GT vehicles from the 1950s and 1960s, was extended from 300 km to 500 km.

The last ADAC Nürburgring Classic took place from September 21 to 23, 2007, again with the 500 km race for historic touring cars and GT vehicles, but this time divided into two races. The Mercedes-Benz Museum again presented its vehicles from the pre-war SSK to the W 196 that Jochen Mass drove. The formula cars in the ADAC Graf Berghe von Trips Cup race and many regularity runs for the participating brand clubs also started again in the same way. 22,000 spectators were at the ring on the weekend in glorious weather.

Until at least April 2008, another ADAC Nürburgring Classic was planned for the end of September in the Nürburgring's calendar of events , but ultimately the event was replaced by the new edition of the ADAC Eifel race .

Current event format

Le Mans start of the participants in the "Elephant Race" 2018

In 2017, after a 9-year break, the Nürburgring Classic was revived with a new event concept. For the 90th anniversary of the Nürburgring, the Düsseldorf Automobile and Motorsport Club 05 hosted the new classic car racing event from June 16 to 18, 2017.

The main race of the Nürburgring Classic , the three-hour long distance race, was named "Eifelrennen" in honor of the anniversary of the opening race of 1927.

Through the cooperation with the organizers of the Classic Days Schloss Dyck , the focus of the event has changed from a pure racing event to an event with a higher level of audience and club sport involvement. For example, the “old paddock” was reserved for the meeting of 120 pre-war vehicles, whose participants were also allowed to take part in the revival drive on the Südschleife and in the “elephant race”. Additional stands in the pre-start area and quiet zones were created for the spectators.

Unveiling of a Caracciola memorial column at the Nürburgring.

In honor of the 1927 winner, Rudolf Caracciola , the President of ADAC Nordrhein, Peter Meyer , the DAMC-05 honorary chairman Rainer Temme and Thomas Caracciola, Rudolf Caracciola's great-nephew, unveiled a memorial column in the paddock. Caracciola's winning car, the Mercedes-Benz 680 S from the Nürburgring exhibition, was also presented.

At the start were the FHR Dunlop Endurance Cup , Battle of the Dwarfs , Gentle Drivers Trophy and the Touring Car Classics . As in DTM times, the touring car classics were commented on by Rainer Braun and Christa Haas .

The first event already had 17,000 spectators.

In November 2017, the members of DAMC 05 decided that the organization of the Nürburgring Classic would be spun off into DAMC 05 Veranstaltungs-GmbH and that the association would take on the role of the ideal sponsor.

In the second year of the new edition, around 700 participants were registered. In 2018, pre-war vehicles from more than eight nations and more than 25 different brands such as Bentley , Riley , Bugatti , Mercedes , Hotchkiss , Lagonda and Amilcar gathered in the "Old Paddock" . The weekend from June 15th to 17th was attended by over 20,000 spectators. The touring car classics, youngtimer trophy, FHR long-distance trophy, 100 mile trophy were back at the start and the Canadian-American Challenge Cup .

In order to make the weekend of 2019 even more family-friendly, the accompanying program was expanded to complement the racing events. In that year, the pure racing program was supplemented by an exhibition with historic racing transporters, distributed across the entire paddock. On Saturday the day was concluded with a live concert and fireworks, and during the day a ferris wheel beckoned as a lookout point.

On the weekend of May 24th to 26th, 2019, around 800 starters and almost 25,000 spectators (according to the organizers) were at the ring.
