Edemil Araquem José de Melo , also known simply as Araken Demelo in Greece (born July 7, 1944 in Rio de Janeiro , † October 17, 2001 in Caracas ) was a Brazilian football player and later teacher.

Life

Sports career

After he had been trained in his hometown with the renowned club CR Vasco da Gama in his youth , de Melo came to Danubio FC in the Uruguayan capital Montevideo in 1964 as an almost completely unknown player . There, however, he managed to quickly win the fans' sympathy with brilliant technology and spectacular goals. In 1966 he was even top scorer in the Primera División with twelve goals . A little later he moved to Argentina for CA Huracán , for whom he scored ten goals in the first season. De Melo was a strongly built player with great physical strength, who often moved awkwardly and rigidly without the ball. As soon as necessary, however, he showed an unimagined dynamic agility and was able to sprint over the entire course, making him difficult to defend. In addition, he was considered extremely well-versed in relation to so-called banana flanks .

As the first Brazilian ever, de Melo moved to the top Greek club and then reigning champion Panathinaikos AO from Athens in 1972 , who had attracted attention the previous year by participating in the finals in the European Cup . Although he did not win a title in two years - together with Juan Ramón Verón and Antonis Antoniadis he formed a feared and very effective storm trio and is still the most dangerous Brazilian in the club's history. He also had some appearances on the international stage: During the first round of the European Cup in 1972/73 , he played in a two-leg match against CSKA Sofia in September and October 1972 , which was eliminated. A year later, in September and October 1973, he played both first-round games against OFK Belgrade in the 1973/74 UEFA Cup and even scored 1-0 in the second leg. However, because of the away goal rule , Panathinaikos retired early. A little later, de Melo moved to suburb rivals APS Atromitos Athens and ended his career there after another season.

Private life

After retiring from active sport, he founded a soccer school in Caracas , the Brazil Soccer School, which is attached to the Universidad Central de Venezuela . He managed this together with his brother Arnout, who had played for the Venezuelan Deportivo Italia FC . In October 2001, Araquem de Melo committed suicide under pressure from financial problems. Before the game between Atromitos and Ethnikos Piraeus on October 24, 2001, a minute's silence was observed in his memory .
