Secrecy was a thrash , power and progressive metal band from Bremen that was formed in 1986, disbanded in 1993, reunited in 2007 and disbanded in 2008.

history

After the band Sweet Cheater broke up in 1986, their members, guitarist Manny Meccyca and drummer Alex "Trödel" Zasso, founded the band Secrecy. In the spring of 1987 bassist Steve Kerby joined the line-up, followed shortly afterwards by singer Peter Dartin. Dartin also occasionally played the electric guitar. After a long trial period, the first demo Like Burning One's Boat was released in 1988 . A little later, Jörn Schlueter joined Secrecy as another guitarist. Within nine days he acquired the band's material before holding a concert with the other members. Through the demo, Secrecy got a contract with Noise Records . The band then went to the Musiclab Berlin together with producer Harris Johns in the summer of 1990 , before the debut album Art in Motion was released that same year . Since the band worked with many different guitar tracks, some of the recordings also took place alone at night. Then she went on tour with Fates Warning and Sanctuary . However, due to poor organization, this had to be canceled. Then the group started working on the second album. The second album produced by Ralf Krause was recorded in the Sky Trak Studio and was released in 1991 under the name Raging Romance . Shortly after the recording, the guitarist Meccyca left the band and was replaced by Bernd Nullmeyer. Zasso also left Secrecy, but returned to the band a short time later. With a different line-up, the band wrote a few new songs and made demo recordings before Dartin left the band. In the meantime, Noise Records had split up with the band because they were considered too unstable. After a final appearance on November 13, 1993 together with all members, Secrecy broke up.

In 2007 the band reunited, with the guitarist Schlüter being replaced by Dennis Krueger. As another guitarist, Manny Meccyca was back with Secrecy. After the announced appearance on Bang Your Head in 2008, the band announced in an interview that they would no longer hold any more gigs because the members wanted to devote themselves to their other band projects.

style

According to laut.de , the band played complex Power Metal. In a metal hammer interview with Andreas Schöwe in 1990, Peter Dartin admitted that there might be certain aural parallels to Fates Warning and Queensrÿche , but the music is too complex to really be compared. According to Gerd Gong from Metal Hammer , Harris Johns described the band's music as " Yes and Thrash". Producer Dirk Steffens describes it similarly and calls it a mixture of “Yes and Metallica ”. Olaf Berhorst from Metal Hammer described the band's music in 1992 as melodic heavy metal with progressive features. In an interview with Berhorst, the drummer Zasso stated that he could not do much with an assignment to progressive metal, since the members primarily prefer thrash metal bands such as Slayer and Sepultura or melodic works such as the first Leatherwolf album. All members are equally involved in the writing of the music and the lyrics. According to Stefan Glas from Metal Hammer there was “[w] awesome virtuoso songwriting, [a] sophisticated arrangement, atmospheric pieces [...] [and] innovative ideas” on Art in Motion . Uwe Schnädelbach from Metal Hammer stated in his review of Raging Romance that he was enthusiastic about the band, even if he had hardly anything else for progressive heavy metal bands from Germany Sieges Even , Deathrow and Mekong Delta . Balladic and power metal songs can also be heard on the album . Schnädelbach also thought that Secrecy would fit well into the live program of bands like Vicious Rumors and Savatage . On Set the Sails , according to Jörg Staude from Metal Hammer , the band no longer played progressive Thrash Metal, in contrast to its predecessors, but is now more direct and melodic. The bass is creaking, while the vocals have a melancholy sound.
