Leatherwolf is an American heavy metal band from Huntington Beach ( California ). The band is best known for the use of three lead guitars, the so-called Triple Ax Attack .

history

The band was formed in Huntington Beach in 1981. At first she was musically oriented mainly towards the European NWoBHM movement.

Right from the start, the band relied on three guitarists, a stylistic device that was later made more popular by bands like Iron Maiden . Leatherwolf quickly gained a good reputation live in their home country and had Metallica support a concert in 1982 .

In 1983 the band recorded their first demo tape and a year later a self-titled EP , which was released on the independent label Tropical Records . In 1985 this EP was supplemented by five more tracks and released in the USA under the album name Leatherwolf . For international release, the album was renamed Endangered Species .

In 1986 bassist Matt Hurich left the band to play with the Christian metal band Stryper . Paul Carman took over his position a short time later .

The band's second album was released in 1987 and is also called Leatherwolf , although it does not include a single track from the first album. It was released on the major label Island Records and is clearly based on Glam Metal , which was particularly successful commercially in the USA at the time.

For the recordings of the third album Street Ready , the band went to Nassau in the Bahamas . It was also released on Island Records in 1989. Due to the lack of commercial success, however, the band's label canceled their record deal shortly after the recordings. Then the band broke up.

It wasn't until ten years later, in 1999, that the band members got together again and played a gig at Wacken Open Air . In the same year the band released a live album on their own with the title Wide Open , which found more than 10,000 buyers without the help of a record label.

The previous singer Michael Olivieri left Leatherwolf in 2000 and was briefly replaced by Chris Adams , who sang three songs for a demo recording in 2002. A short time later, however , Michael Olivieri returned and also recorded a demo in 2003, but then left the band again. This time he was replaced by the former Racer X singer Jeff Martin , who participated in another demo recording of three songs. In July 2005 the band announced surprisingly that the former Seven Witches and Crimson Glory singer Wade Black would be responsible for the vocals in the future.

In October of the same year, the band began recording their fourth album, World Asylum . Michael Olivieri can also be heard on the album. He played guitar parts on some of the songs and did the backing vocals. Pete Perez , who previously played with Riot and Spastic Ink , was the bass player . The well-known producer Jacob Hansen was responsible for mixing the album .

In March 2006 Leatherwolf signed a record deal with Massacre Records , after which the album was released in June on the same label. Shortly thereafter, founding member Carey Howe got out and his role was taken over by Eric Halpern , who previously played at Helstar . In this constellation the band performed at the Bang Your Head Festival in Balingen and at the ProgPower VII Festival in Atlanta .

A year later the band re-formed in the original line-up, with Michael Olivieri as singer and guitarist and Carey Howe as guitarist. This was followed by a headlining appearance at the Keep It True Festival and the release of the album New World Asylum . This was a new recording of their 2006 comeback album World Asylum with Michael Olivieri as singer.

In spring 2008 the co-founders of the band Geoff Gayer and Paul Carman got out. They have been replaced by Patrick Guyton and Greg Erba .
