Nelson Abeijón , full name Nelson Javier Abeijón Pessi , (born July 21, 1973 in Montevideo ) is a former Uruguayan football player and current coach.

Player career

The 1.85 meter tall midfielder Abeijón began his career with the traditional Uruguayan club Nacional Montevideo . There he was in the squad from Apertura 1994 up to and including Clausura 1997. For the years 1995 to 1997 he played 81 league games and nine goals at the "Bolsos". During his time at Nacional, for example, Espanyol Barcelona offered a transfer fee of $ 550,000 to commit Abeijón, who was represented by advisor Marcos Lubelsky at the time , but was rejected by club president Ceferino Rodríguez . At the beginning of 1997, according to the Argentine club boss Mauricio Macri , the Boca Juniors also showed interest in his commitment. Ultimately, he switched to Racing Santander that year . In the 1997/98 season he completed 30 first division games for the Spanish club and scored two goals. In the 1998/99 season Abeijón was active in the Italian Serie A for Cagliari Calcio and stayed with the Italians until the 2003/04 season. During this period he has 77 appearances in Serie A and Serie B , in which he scored three personal goals. For the 2003/04 season he joined Como Calcio on loan . The second division team has ten second division appearances (one goal) for him. He then returned to Cagliari Calcio in the current season and ran up to the end of the first division season 2005/06 in 77 league games (eight goals). A move to Atalanta Bergamo followed . At the club from Lombardy , he completed five personally goalless league games in the 2006/07 season. For the Clausura 2008 he returned to Uruguay and played for River Plate Montevideo . In the first half of the series, he played two league matches (no goal). In the 2008/09 season he was used eight times (no goal) in the Primera División .

National team

Abeijón took part in the tournament in Mar del Plata called with the Uruguayan selection at the Preolímpico . He completed from his debut on October 19, 1994 to his last appearance on November 19, 2003 23 caps for the Uruguayan senior team , in which he scored a total of two goals. He was a member of the 1995 Copa America squad and won the title with Uruguay.

Coaching career

From mid-January 2016 to May 2016, he coached the second division club Oriental de Football . His assistant coach at this station was Gustavo Badell . Since July 2016 he has been the coach of Deportivo Maldonado , which is also in the second-highest Uruguayan league .
