Gustavo Machaín , full name Gustavo Darío Machaín Uhalde , (born September 19, 1965 in Montevideo ) is a former Uruguayan football player and coach.

Player career

The 1.80 meter tall defensive player Machaín played in the course of his career initially from 1980 to 1986 for Danubio FC . Then he was active from 1987 for the then second division Liverpool Montevideo . In that year he rose to the Primera División with the team coached by Julio César Antúnez . In 1989 he moved from Liverpool Fútbol Club to Progreso . There he was with the team Uruguayan champions that season and reached the round of 16 of the Copa Libertadores 1990 with the team . From 1991 he continued his career at Central Español . He then went abroad and from then on played in 1992 for Sagan Tosu (PJM Futures) in Japan's fourth division. In 1993 he returned to Central Español. In 1994 and 1995, respectively, two career stations followed in Peru at León de Huánuco and Cienciano . At Huánuco he made his debut on August 14, 1994 on the 15th day of the Torneo Descentralizado and finally took fourth place in this competition with the team coached by Ramón Quiroga . His only goal of the season in his injury or illness-related only 14 season appearances scored Machaín, who was an undisputed regular player in that season, in a 2-0 victory over the Sport Boys . Machaín took part with the Uruguayan U-20 selection at the U-20 South American Championship 1985 in Paraguay . The Uruguayan team finished fourth there. During the tournament he was used by coach Aníbal Gutiérrez Ponce seven times (no goal). He also took part in the Universiade in Kobe with Uruguay in 1985 .

Trainer and functionary career

After his active career, Machaín initially took on an engagement as a trainer in the youth field at Central Español from 1999 to 2001. In 2003, according to other sources from 2002 to 2009, he was the youth coach of Danubio FC, and in 2009 he is said to have looked after the team in the Primera División on an interim basis. From the beginning of August 2009 to December 11, 2009 he held the position of head coach at Rocha FC in the Segunda División . This was immediately followed by a position as football director at CSD Municipal in Guatemala until mid-October 2010 . He also worked there as Jorge Habegger's assistant coach and as an interim coach. From October 15 to November 23, 2010 he was assistant coach under Manuel Gregorio Keosseián at Club Atlético Peñarol . From January 2011 he took over the position of general coordinator of the youth department at Danubio. From May 10, 2011 to June 17, 2011, he worked there as head coach of the first division team. He later served as the Montevidean sports director until his resignation in June 2012. He gave up the office in order to take up another position at the Guatemalan Club Municipal from the end of June 2012 . There he was still active as a sports director in May 2015. In November 2015 he moved back to the coaching bench with the Guatemalans.
