Oswaldo Javier Sánchez Ibarra (born September 21, 1973 in Guadalajara , Jalisco ) is a former Mexican football goalkeeper . He ended his career with Santos Laguna in 2014 . With Santos and Deportivo Guadalajara he won three championships and once the cup . With 725 appearances, Oswaldo is the record player in Liga MX and played 99 games for the Mexican national team between 1996 and 2011 .

Career

On October 30, 1993, the 20-year-old Oswaldo made his debut for Atlas Guadalajara . In the summer of 1996 the goalkeeper moved to Club América , one of the most popular clubs in Mexico. During this time he was appointed to the national team of coach Ricardo Antonio La Volpe . In the summer of 1999, Sánchez moved from America to Deportivo Guadalajara , where he stayed for seven years and became the idol of the fans. Immediately after winning the Torneo Apertura 2006 , he moved to Santos Laguna , where he signed a three-year deal. With an annual salary of $ 1.8 million, he was the highest paid soccer player in Mexico at the time and the goalkeeper with the most appearances for the Mexican national team.

National team

He was a substitute at the 1998 World Cup and 2002 World Cup , once as the second and once as the third goalkeeper. With the Mexican national team , he won the 2003 CONCACAF Gold Cup and was voted best goalkeeper. At the Confederations Cup in 2005 , he was allowed to play all Mexico games. The team finished fourth, but he was again voted the tournament's best goalkeeper. At the 2006 World Cup in Germany , Oswaldo Sánchez also played all games for Mexico. His use was endangered shortly before the start of the tournament because his father had died and he was traveling back to Mexico from the German training camp for the funeral. He only returned to Germany shortly before his team's first game against Iran .
