Jerzy Dudek (born March 23, 1973 in Rybnik ) is a former Polish football goalkeeper .

Career

Dudek's professional career began in 1995 with the then Polish third division club Sokół Tychy . Even then, many observers of Polish first division clubs recognized Dudek's talent, but a move to the Polish first division never worked. After a year at Tychy, Dudek was already about to move to the Polish first division club Górnik Zabrze , but ultimately a talent scout from Feyenoord Rotterdam discovered him , where he finally moved in the same year.

At the Dutch first division he had a difficult time at first. He was only considered a reserve goalkeeper of the second national goalkeeper of the Netherlands , Ed de Goey . But when he moved to the English first division club Chelsea in 1997 , Dudek became a regular goalkeeper at Feyenoord.

In 1998 a dream came true for Dudek when he was invited to the Polish national team by the then Polish national coach Janusz Wójcik . In 1998 he made his debut against Israel . Nevertheless, he was initially only left with the reserve role behind Adam Matysek .

In 1999 Dudek won a title for the first time in his career, the Dutch championship with Feyenoord. He was also voted the best goalkeeper in the Dutch Eredivisie that season .

After the Polish national team failed to qualify for the EM 2000 and Janusz Wójcik resigned from his position, Jerzy Engel took over the coaching position. Engel was a big fan of Dudek and made him Poland's new national goalkeeper.

2001 Dudek moved from Feyenoord Rotterdam to Liverpool FC in the English Premier League .

After an extremely successful first season he got problems after the 2002 World Cup in South Korea , which was disappointing for Poland , made many minor mistakes and was replaced by substitute goalkeeper Chris Kirkland . After Kirkland injured himself, Dudek was briefly the goalkeeper of Liverpool FC again . At the end of the 2004/05 season, Dudek finally won the UEFA Champions League with Liverpool FC with a 6-5 win on penalties against AC Milan . With two penalties saved, he personally played a large part in this success and became the hero of the game. He also kept two dangerous shots from Andrij Shevchenko from close range in the last few minutes and thus saved the "Reds" from the penalty shoot-out. His particular penalty shoot-out tactic is while the opposing player is running up to move on the goal line and make small jumps, which often confuses the shooter as he cannot foresee which direction Dudek is going to jump. This confusion tactic made him famous all over the world and it went down in football history as "Do the Dudek" or simply as "Dudek Dance" . In the post-game TV interview, he explained that Jamie Carragher had pointed him out to this tactic, which former goalkeeper Bruce Grobbelaar had already used.

In the 2005/06 season Dudek got a tough competitor at Liverpool with the Spanish second national goalkeeper Jose Manuel "Pepe" Reina . The season for Dudek was a bit mixed. Shortly before the start of the season, Dudek injured his wrist and was out for about four weeks. He was eventually replaced by Reina as a regular goalkeeper. In January 2006 Dudek negotiated a change with 1. FC Köln . According to his advisor, Dudek really wanted to go to Cologne to recommend himself to the national team with match practice. The transfer did not take place, however, manager Rafael Benitez took a stand.

For the last qualifying game against England Dudek was nominated again, but national coach Paweł Janas surprisingly decided for Artur Boruc as number one goal at the 2006 World Cup and did without Dudek completely. Instead, was Tomasz Kuszczak from Manchester United nominated as the second goalkeeper.

After the 2006 World Cup, the new coach Leo Beenhakker brought him back to the Polish national team. On August 16, 2006, he played in a friendly against Denmark again as number one international match. The game was lost 2-0. Then he also got the first 2008 European Cup - qualifying match against Finland his chance, but there indebted Dudek two goals in the 1: 3 defeat of Poland. Many Polish newspapers described this game as "the downfall of the Dudek era". He played his last game for the Polish national football team on October 14, 2009 in the qualifying phase for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa against Slovakia. The game ended 0-1. In total, Dudek completed 59 international matches.

In 2007 Dudek turned down an offer to extend his contract from Liverpool and moved to Real Madrid . There he was second choice behind the Spanish goalkeeper Iker Casillas . On the 37th day of the 2007/08 season he made his competitive debut for the 'Royal'. Dudek was in goal for 90 minutes in the 2-2 draw against Real Saragossa . Winning the Spanish championship had already been decided for Madrid at this point. He then ended his career in the summer of 2011.

In February 2013, the Polish Football Association announced that Dudek would receive a farewell game . On June 4, 2013, almost two years after his retirement, Dudek played in a friendly against Liechtenstein and played his sixtieth and last game in the national dress.
