Asmir Begović (born June 20, 1987 in Trebinje , SFR Yugoslavia , today Bosnia and Herzegovina ) is a Bosnian - Canadian football player . The goalkeeper plays on loan from AFC Bournemouth to AC Milan and is a Bosnian-Herzegovinian international .

Career

Begović came to Germany as a refugee. At the age of ten he went on to Canada with his family before returning to Germany as an athlete. In 2003 he moved from FC Kirchhausen to England in the youth department of FC Portsmouth . After two years he moved to the club's professional squad. In order to give him match practice, the club loaned him to RAA La Louvière in Belgium . During the second half of the 2006/07 season he was given in another loan deal to Macclesfield Town . There he made his league debut against Stockport County on November 25, 2006 . After starting goalkeeper Jonny Brain was injured, Begović was substituted on in the 80th minute. After two more games for Macclesfield, Begović also suffered an injury. He returned to Portsmouth before the winter break. At the beginning of the 2007/08 season, the goalkeeper was loaned to AFC Bournemouth , where he was to remain until January 2008. He was called back to Portsmouth in October of the current season. In March 2008, the club gave Begović again from. At Yeovil Town , the goalkeeper signed a four-week contract. After two missions he was ordered back. In August 2008 it came back to Yeovil Town. Begović signed for three months.

On February 1, 2010 he signed a contract with the English first division club Stoke City until 2014. After he was there for some time only number two behind goalkeeper Thomas Sørensen , he replaced this on the tenth day of the 2010/11 season and got the trust of coach Tony Pulis . On November 2, 2013 Begović scored in the match against Southampton FC after 13 seconds from his own penalty area. With a shooting distance of 91.9 m, this goal was officially included in the Guinness Book of Records on September 4, 2014 as the hit from the greatest distance.

For the season 2015/16 Begovic moved to Chelsea . He was given a four-year contract until June 30, 2019 and will take the post of substitute goalkeeper behind Thibaut Courtois . On the 1st matchday (2-2 against Swansea City ) Begović completed his first league appearance for the Blues when he came in the second half for the sent off Courtois in goal.

Begović moved to AFC Bournemouth in the summer of 2017 . He spent two years there and played 62 Premier League games before falling behind Aaron Ramsdale , Artur Boruc and Mark Travers in the pecking order . He then moved to Azerbaijan on loan to Qarabağ Ağdam in September 2019 .

National team

Begović played for the U-20 national team of Canada between 2004 and 2007 . With her he took part in the U-20 World Cup in the Netherlands in 2005 and in his own country in 2007 . After being number two behind Josh Wagenaar in 2005 , he played the 2007 World Cup as a regular goalkeeper. The team was eliminated from the tournament after three games without a goal or a win. After a deliberate handball outside the penalty area, Begović was sent off with red in the third round match.

In 2007 he received his first nomination for the senior national team of Canada , but was not used in the friendly against Iceland on August 14th that year . In the same year he was voted U-20 player of the year in Canada. So he replaced David Edgar . In June 2009 Begović decided to play for the national team of Bosnia-Herzegovina . He made his international debut on October 10, 2009 in the World Cup qualifier against Estonia when he came on for Kenan Hasagić in stoppage time. He was part of the Bosnia-Herzegovina squad at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil . There he was used in all three preliminary round games. Then Bosnia-Herzegovina was eliminated.
