Christopher James "Chris" Mepham (born November 5, 1997 in Hammersmith ) is a Welsh football player who has been under contract with the first division AFC Bournemouth since January 2019 . The center- back has been a Welsh international since March 2018 .

Brentford FC

At the age of ten, Mepham began playing football at the Chelsea FC youth academy , where he played for four years and was then released. In 2012 he moved to the youth team at Brentford FC , for whom his father Roy had played in the 1960s. On February 2, 2016, he signed his first professional contract with the Bees , but remained in the reserve team. After good performance in the B-Team in the first half of the 2016/17 season, he signed a new contract on January 6, 2017 until 2019. A day later, he played for the first time in a first-team game when he was in the FA Cup -Game against FC Eastleigh in the closing stages for Harlee Dean was substituted on. This mission remained his only one for the professionals this season. For his strong performance at the reserves , he was named B Team Player of the Year within the club .

After center-back Harlee Dean left the club for Birmingham City on August 30, 2017 , the club decided not to sign a substitute and instead promoted Mepham to the first-team squad, who signed a new five-year contract shortly afterwards. Mepham made his first appearance of the season for Brentford on September 19, 2017 in a 3-1 home defeat in the League Cup against Norwich City and directly owed a penalty in this. On September 26, he made his debut in a 1-1 draw with Derby County in the EFL Championship . In his first season as a professional he made 23 appearances and benefited mainly from injuries to central defenders John Egan and Andreas Bjelland . He scored his only goal of the season on March 30, 2018 against Sheffield United .

In the season 2018/19 Mepham launched as the undisputed key players in central defense of the Bees . On Matchday 13, he suffered his first dismissal in the 1-0 home defeat by Bristol City when he received two yellow cards within eight minutes. Before leaving, he made 27 season appearances in Brentford's jersey.

Bournemouth AFC

On January 22, 2019, Mepham moved to the first division AFC Bournemouth for a transfer fee of 13.6 million euros , where he signed a long-term contract. He made his debut in the Cherries jersey on January 30, 2019, when he came on as a substitute for Junior Stanislas in the final 4-0 win over Chelsea FC . In the remainder of the 2018/19 season, he established himself in the regular formation and made twelve more league appearances. On August 10, 2019 (1st matchday), he scored for the Cherries for the first time in the 1-1 draw against Sheffield United .

National team

In 2017, Chris Mepham took the Welsh U-20 national team at the tournament in Toulon , where he came to use one. He also played four games for the U-21s .

In March 2018, Mepham was nominated for the first time in the squad of the Welsh A-selection on the occasion of the China Cup . He made his debut in the 6-0 win against hosts China on March 22, 2018, when he came on for Ben Davies in the 70th minute of the game .
