David Robert Brooks (born July 8, 1997 in Warrington , England ) is an English- Welsh football player who has been under contract with AFC Bournemouth since the 2018/19 season . He occupies the position of attacking midfielder both in the club and in the Welsh national team .

Club career

Sheffield United

Brooks comes from the Manchester City youth he joined when he was seven. In 2014 he moved to Sheffield United Academy and signed his first professional contract there a year later. On August 29, 2015, he moved in a loan deal with teammate CJ Hamilton for a month at the fifth division FC Halifax Town . The loan period was extended once for a month and ultimately he came to five missions in which he scored a goal. He made his debut for the first team of the Blades on August 30, 2016 in the EFL Trophy when he came on as a substitute in the 0-0 draw against the U-23 side Leicester Citys in the second half. His next appearance in this cup competition was on October 4th in a 2-1 home defeat against FC Walsall . His club made it to the second highest English division in this 2016/17 season, without Brooks' involvement .

He made his first league appearance in the next season 2017/18 in the 0-1 away defeat against FC Middlesbrough . On October 17, 2017 Brooks signed a new contract with Sheffield United until the summer of 2021. The first goal of his professional career he scored ten days later in a 2-1 away win in the Yorkshire derby against Leeds United . He ended the season with 33 appearances in which he scored three goals and six assists.

Bournemouth AFC

The young attacking player's strong performances were also noticed by Premier League clubs and on July 1, 2018, Brooks moved to the first division AFC Bournemouth for a transfer fee of 11.3 million euros , where he signed a four-year contract. He made his debut in the Cherries jersey on matchday one of the 2018/19 season in a 2-0 home win against Cardiff City . He also quickly made an impression in the first division. His first goal was on October 1st in a 4-2 win at the Vitality Stadium at home . More goals against Watford and Fulham FC followed by the end of the month. In a 2-0 home win against Brighton & Hove Albion on December 22, he scored his first brace of his career. Brooks signed a new contract with the Cherries in March 2019 , which will now bind him to the club until July 2022. At the end of the 2018/19 season , he had seven goals and five assists on the account. In July 2019, Brooks sustained a serious ankle injury while preparing for the season, which is why he had to undergo an operation and was originally supposed to be out until October. After his return was delayed, a second operation followed in December. Bournemouth announced that a return to the pitch is unlikely in the 2019-20 season .

National team

Born in Warrington , England , Brooks was eligible to play for both national teams due to his mother, who was born in Llangollen , Wales . In May 2017 this led to a curious situation when he was nominated to the squad for the Welsh U-20 national team for the 2017 Toulon tournament . He rejected this nomination shortly afterwards, as he was also nominated for the English selection . With England he won the tournament and was named the best player of the tournament after scoring in the final among other things.

On August 25, 2017, he was finally nominated for the Welsh U-21 national team and made his debut against Switzerland on September 1 . He also scored a goal in the 3-0 win.

He finally made his debut for the Welsh A-selection on November 10, 2017 , when he lost 2-0 away in the friendly against France . In the 1: 2 away defeat in the qualifier for the 2020 European Championship against Croatia , he scored for the first time for his home country.
