Maynooth Castle ( Irish Caisleán Mhaigh Nuad ) is the ruins of a low castle in Maynooth in County Kildare, Ireland . Today it stands at the entrance to the south campus of the local university. The castle, built at the beginning of the 13th century, became the main residence of the FitzMaurice and FitzGerald families from Kildare. The castle ruins are considered a national monument .

history

Maynooth Castle 1885

Richard de Clare, 2nd Earl of Pembroke , ( Strongbow ) lent the area of today's County Kildare in 1176 to Maurice FitzGerald, Lord of Lanstephan . The original donjon was built around 1203. The castle was Gerald FitzMaurice, the first Lord of Offaly , the second son of Maurice FitzGerald, Lord of Lanstephan, two at the confluence of streams build in the late 12th century. It became the home of the FitzMaurice and FitzGerald families. Sir John FitzGerald had it expanded in the 15th century. Gerald FitzMaurice's descendants became Earls of Kildare and Earls of Leinster , and Lords Deputy of Ireland.

The FitzGeralds' time at the castle ended with the rebellion of Silken Thomas , son of the 9th Earl of Kildare. An English force led by William Skeffington bombarded the massive castle in March 1535, with the English army's heavy, modern siege guns turning most of the medieval building into ruins. The castle fell after a 10-day siege and the garrison was subsequently all executed in front of the castle gate. Silken Thomas was captured shortly afterwards and handed over to the Tower of London along with his five uncles . On February 3, 1537, they were executed in Tyburn for treason .

In the years 1630-1635 Richard Boyle, 1st Earl of Cork , Maynooth Castle restored after his daughter George FitzGerald, 16th Earl of Kildare , married. However, much of the building was destroyed again in the 1640s, during the Eleven Years ' War. Only the gatehouse (where you can still see the combined coats of arms of the Boyles and the FitzGeralds today) and the solar tower remained. The FitzGeralds left Maynooth Castle for good, making Kilkea Castle and then Carton House their family home.

today

In February 2000, the Office of Public Works began restoration work again to turn the castle ruins into a tourist attraction. The castle ruins are open to the public from June to October from 10 a.m. to 5.45 p.m.
