history
Beginnings of the Carton estate
In its more than 800-year history, the Carton estate ( English Carton Demesne ) has undergone many changes. The property came into the possession of the FitzGerald family soon after Maurice FitzGerald, Lord of Lanstephan , (ca.1105–1176), a Cambro-Norman nobleman, played an active role in the capture of Dublin by the Normans in 1170 and for it Lord of Maynooth , an area that is now Carton House.
His son, Gerald FitzMaurice (approx. 1150-1204) became iure uxoris 1st Baron Offaly and his descendant John FitzGerald, 4th Baron of Offaly , (approx. 1250-1316) became 1st Earl of Kildare in 1315. Under Gerald FitzGerald, 8th Earl of Kildare , (approx. 1456-approx. 1513), who long held the office of Lord Deputy of Ireland , the FitzGeralds achieved supremacy as the actual rulers of the Lordship of Ireland in the years 1477-1513. The Lordship of Ireland was replaced by the Kingdom of Ireland in 1542 .
But the grandson of the 8th Earl, Thomas FitzGerald, 10th Earl of Kildare , (1513-1537), who was called Silken Thomas , was executed along with his five uncles in Tyburn in February 1537 for a revolt against the English crown had cited. Silken Thomas, previously installed as Lord Offaly , had taken over the Earldom in December 1534. Even if the FitzGeralds later got their lands and titles back, they did not get their position at the Irish or British courts until Robert FitzGerald, 19th Earl of Kildare , (1675-1743) became a well-known statesman.
The first house in Carton
A house in Carton was first mentioned at the beginning of the 17th century when Sir William Talbot, 1st Baronet , leased land from Gerald FitzGerald, 14th Earl of Kildare , († 1612) and was supposed to have a house built. The house and lands were confiscated by the Crown in 1691 and sold to Major General Richard Ingoldsby , Master General of the Ordnance , in 1703 .
The beginnings of today's house
In 1739 the 19th Earl of Kildare bought back the lease and commissioned Richard Cassels (1690–1751) to design the house that is still preserved today. In the same year the FitzGerald family bought Frescati House . Cassels was also responsible for other great Irish houses, e.g. B. Castle Hume on the banks of Lough Erne in County Fermanagh , Summerhill House in County Meath , Westport House in County Mayo , Powerscourt House in County Wicklow and 1745 Kildare House (later renamed Leinster House ) in Dublin, which he also used for the FitzGeralds built.
1747 married James FitzGerald, 20th Earl of Kildare , (raised to the 1st Duke of Leinster in 1766 ) Lady Emily Lennox , daughter of Charles Lennox, 2nd Duke of Richmond , and great-granddaughter of King Charles II of England . Lady Emily played an important role in the design of the house and the property as it is today. She created the China Room (bedchamber for Queen Victoria ) and adorned the famous Shell Cottage on the estate with shells from around the world. One of Lady Emily's 23 children was the noted Irish patriot, Lord Edward FitzGerald , a leader of the 1798 rebellion .
19th century
Carton House remained unchanged until 1815; then decided Augustus FitzGerald, 3rd Duke of Leinster , (1791-1874 ) to sell Leinster House to the Dublin Society (from 1820 Royal Dublin Society ) and to make Carton House his headquarters. He commissioned Sir Richard Morrison to expand and remodel the house. Morrison replaced the arched colonnades with straight connections to provide additional space, e.g. B. the famous dining room. At that time, the entrance to the house was also moved to the north side.
20th and 21st centuries
Carton House remained in the possession of the FitzGeralds until the early 20th century, when Edward FitzGerald, 7th Duke of Leinster , (1892-1976) sold his treasure to a moneylender, Sir Harry Mallaby-Deeley, 1st Baronet , for his gambling debts payable in the amount of £ 67,500. The 7th Duke, who was called "Lord Edward FitzGerald" until he inherited the Duchy in February 1922, was originally only the third in the lineage, so he never thought he would inherit the Duchy. But his two older brothers remained unmarried and died before him.
His eldest brother was Maurice FitzGerald, 6th Duke of Leinster , (1887-1922), who had inherited the duchy and lands as a child in December 1893, but suffered from serious mental illness. The 6th Duke lived in a house on the grounds of the Craig House Psychiatric Hospital in Edinburgh from 1907 until his death in February 1922 . The second oldest brother of Lord Edward was Major Lord Desmond FitzGerald (1888-1916), an officer in the Irish Guards , who in an accident during a grenade demonstration in Calais in the First World War was killed. So Lord Edward inherited the duchy and the remains of the Carton estate in February 1922 and became the 7th Duke. Most of the property was lost to the FitzGerald dynasty. Carton House and the remains of the estate were sold by the 7th Duke and his son, Gerald FitzGerald, 8th Duke of Leinster (1914-2004), in the late 1940s.
Allegedly in 1923 a local IRA branch came to Carton House to burn it down. They were stopped, however, when a member of the FitzGerald family brought a large painting of Lord Edward FitzGerald to the door and indicated that they would burn down the house of a well-known Irish patriot.
During World War II , Carton House was occupied by the Irish Army, who used the building as the headquarters for the 2nd Infantry Division.
In 1949, Ronald Nall-Cain, 2nd Baron Brocket , (1904–1967), a multi-million pound Tory nobleman, businessman and member of the old Ulster family Ó Catháin (O'Kane), bought his main residence at Brocket Hall in Hertfordshire in England was that house. Lord Brocket bequeathed Carton House to his younger son, David Nall-Cain , who later moved to the Isle of Man and sold the house to the Mallaghan family in 1977 .
In 2017, the Mallaghan family sold Carton House to John Mullen for € 57 million.
Purchase by the state?
From 1977 to 2017 Carton House and its estate belonged to the Mallaghan family and in the 1980s and 1990s the Irish government came under public and political pressure to buy the house and estate, but decided against it.
In film and television
The house was used as a location for filming by many film and television professionals. Two of the films shot there are Stanley Kubrick's Barry Lyndon in 1975 and The Big Red One in 1980. The leading roles were played by Ryan O'Neal (as an Irish adventurer in the 18th century for the soundtrack of The Chieftains ) and Lee Marvin . Some scenes for the film Engagement Detour, starring Amy Adams , Matthew Goode and Adam Scott , were filmed at Carton House in 2009.
Director Blake Edwards and his wife, actress Julie Andrews , lived in Carton House through the summer and fall of 1969 while they were making the film Darlin Lili . Rock Hudson , who played a leading role alongside Andrews, also lived on the property during this time. The house itself appears in various indoor and outdoor shots in the film.
Carton House later served as the main location for the Irish television drama Love / Hate .
Conversion into a hotel with golf courses
In 2000, Carton House was converted into a "Premier Golf Resort and Hotel", an action condemned by historical commissions such as An Taisce and criticized by Senator David Norris in the Seanad Éireann . A hotel was added to the main building, drastically changing it, while the 18th century property was converted into two golf courses.
