Craig House (Edinburgh)

New Craig House

Craig House is a country house and estate on Easter Craiglockhart Hill between the Craiglockhart and Morningside districts of the Scottish capital Edinburgh . Old Craig House dates back to the 16th century and was built on the site of an older building. The house was bought by the Royal Edinburgh Hospital in the late 19th century and the property was converted into a mental hospital under the name Craig House Hospital , with the addition of extensive new buildings. After a renovation, the site opened in 1996 as the Craighouse Campus of Edinburgh Napier University .

history

Craig House is mentioned in a document during the reign of King David II and in 1528 the Abbot of Newbattle created a charter here. This first house was burned to the ground by the Earl of Hertford during Rough Wooing in 1544 .

Old Craig House

Old Craig House

Today's Old Craig House dates from 1565, although its architecture suggests a later year of construction. The Symsounes of Craighouse had it built. It later belonged to the Dick family and was expanded to the northwest around 1746. The historian John Hill Burton (1809-1881) lived there. In the 1880s, Cassell's Old and New Edinburgh guide described it as "an odd looking country house, supposedly haunted by ghosts".

In the 1880s, Dr. Thomas Clouston , Superintendent of the Edinburgh Lunatic Asylum (later Royal Edinburgh Hospital ) advised the managers of the hospital to buy Craig House in 1878. The property was intended for paying patients and the renovation was funded by the sale of land from the existing hospital in Morningside. The new Craig House building was planned by Clouston and designed by architect Sydney Mitchell (whose father, Dr. Arthur Mitchell , was a director of the hospital) in 1887. The actual draftsman was Charles Henry Creig and not his boss Mitchell, although Mitchell was credited with the draft. Work began in 1889 on the large main building, a hospital block and three attached villas, all of which were completed in 1894. The main building, New Craig House, was particularly grandly designed and looked more like a country house or hotel than a health facility. It is reminiscent of the viceroy's house in Shimla . It is kept in a picturesque "free Renaissance style ", the elements of which come from the French Renaissance. The interiors include e.g. B. a large hall and a billiard room.

From 1906 to 1914, the work was carried out by Mitchell's assistant Ernest Auldjo Jamieson , who acted as the sole partner from 1909.

The hospital was renamed the Thomas Clouston Clinic in 1972 , but after the introduction of community care in the early 1980s, it slipped into a period of decline and closed in the early 1990s.

Craighouse Campus

In 1994 Edinburgh Napier University bought the 24 acre property and began a £ 14 million renovation funded by a Historic Building Grant . The new campus opened in September 1996. Social sciences and communication skills courses were held on campus, as well as the Tomlin School of Music .

In March 2011, the university sold the campus as a building site for residential buildings and left the site completely by 2013. Students and employees who studied and worked on the Craighouse campus were relocated to Campi Sighthill , Merchiston and Craiglockhart .

Current status

The Craighouse property is currently owned by the Mountgrange Real Estate Opportunity Fund (MoREOF) through Craighouse Ltd. ( Isle of Man ); the MoREOF is managed by Mountgrange Investment Management LLP .

Edinburgh Napier University, Mountgrange and Sundial Properties formed a consortium to develop the property. The planned development includes the renovation of the existing buildings and the construction of many residential buildings on the entire site, a total of around 116 residential units.

The proposals of this Craighouse Partnership met with considerable opposition because of the plans to create an open green area on the site. The Friends of Craighouse , an action group against any redevelopment of the property, collected 5000 signatures on a petition against the new building plans.

At its meeting on March 21, 2012, the Morningside local authority adopted the following resolution regarding Craighouse: “If the plan application for the Craighouse property provides for redevelopment of areas which in the Edinburgh City Local Plan are open spaces and / or areas of great importance for the landscape We will appeal. ”The Merchiston local government has also expressed concern. The Cockburn Association has issued a warning that it will likely vote against any plan proposal based on the current proposals.

Member of Parliament Jim Eadie said he would "(...) strongly oppose any plan proposal based on these proposals." A number of other politicians, including MP Alison Johnstone , Alderman Gavin Corbett , Sandy Howat , David Key and Melanie Main , have also shared their views on Craighouse.
