Cullahill Castle

Cullahill Castle (also Cullohill Castle , Irish Caisleán na Cúlchoille ) is the ruin of a tower house on a hill near the village of Cullahill ( An Chúlchoill , "the back forest ") in County Laois, Ireland . The Niederungsburg was the main fortress of the McGillapatricks .

history

Finghin Mac Giolla Pádraig had the castle built around 1425.

Sources show that Cullahill Castle was often ordered by King Henry VI of England . was attacked by the "rulers and citizens of Kilkenny ". Such attacks were recorded in 1441 and 1517.

Around 1650 the castle was attacked by Cromwell's troops and partially destroyed. It probably came under cannon fire from a nearby hill.

Since 1657 it has been considered "ruinous and uninhabited".

description

Cullahill Castle is a five story tower house. Most of the north facade, including the entrance, is missing. The ground floor has a vaulted ceiling and there are secret passages and rooms in the outer walls. A straight staircase inside the wall leads to the upper floors. The remains of coupled windows can be found on the upper floors .

On the outside wall, behind the fireplace, there is a sheela-na-gig .

On the other side of the street are the ruins of the castle chapel , a private chapel of the Catholic lords of Upper Ossory .
