David Norris

David Patrick Bernard Norris (born July 1, 1944 in Kinshasa ) is an Irish politician and senator in the Seanad Éireann .

Norris was born in the Congo. After his father's death, he moved to Ireland as a child. There he attended St. Andres's College and The High School in Dublin. After graduating from high school, he went to Trinity College in Dublin, where he received a bachelor's degree in English literature and literature. He later graduated from Trinity College with a Masters . Norris got a job at Trinity College, where he worked as a lecturer and college tutor between 1968 and 1996 . Norris is a member of the Church of Ireland .

Norris has been a member of the Irish Senate since March 10, 1987, where he represents the University of Dublin .

In 1983 Norris sued the Supreme Court in Ireland, where he fought against the illegality of homosexuality in Ireland. His lawsuit was rejected in Dublin with 3-2 votes. Norris then went to the European Court of Human Rights , where Norris won his case against Ireland. In 1993, the illegality of homosexuality was lifted in Ireland.

Norris is also committed to the preservation of Irish Georgian buildings and is a member of the Irish Georgian Society .

In 2011, Norris ran for president , but withdrew his candidacy in August 2011 after it was discovered that he had sought leniency on behalf of a former life partner convicted of sexually abusing a youth in Israel. Shortly afterwards there was the 'withdrawal from retreat', and after the intervention of the later victorious candidate Michael D. Higgins of the Labor Party , who had called on his party's MPs in Dublin City Council to support him, he was nominated. In the election on October 27, he was the penultimate of seven candidates.
