The University of Dublin ( English University of Dublin , Irish Ollscoil Átha Cliath ) is a university in the Irish capital Dublin . It was founded in 1592 by Queen Elizabeth I as " The College of the Holy and Undivided Trinity of Queen Elizabeth near Dublin " and is Ireland's oldest university. The building was built with donations, the property and the ruins of the All Hallows monastery were donated by the city. In the 2003/04 academic year, 15,428 students were enrolled.

Unlike the universities of Oxford and Cambridge , which were modeled on the University of Dublin and which each consist of many colleges, there is only one college in Dublin: Trinity College . Therefore, the terms Trinity College Dublin and University of Dublin are used as synonyms in practice.
