Headquarters in Dublin with a double-decker bus for a city tour

Dublin Bus ( Irish Bus Átha Cliath [ bˠʊsˠ ˈaːhə ˈclʲiə ]) is an Irish bus company based in Dublin . It operates a dense bus network in Dublin and the surrounding counties and thus carries the brunt of the local public transport.

history

Dublin Bus was founded on February 2nd, 1987 as a subsidiary of the state-owned transport company Córas Iompair Éireann (CIÉ). The basis for this was the Transport Act of 1986. CIÉ was founded in 1945 as the successor to the Dublin United Transport Company (DUTC).

In 2006 Dublin Bus made a profit of 4,258,000 euros and employed 3,453 people.

Lines and fares

There are almost 200 bus routes operated by Dublin Bus in and around Dublin. The annual mileage is around 60 million kilometers. The number of passengers in 2006 was around 146 million.

A system of 15 Quality Bus Corridors enables buses to be given priority and thus contributes to the fact that the city center can often be reached more quickly by bus than would be possible with your own car.

During the day, the fares depend on the distance covered. Flat rate prices have to be paid for the night bus offer.

In principle, different types of lines can be distinguished:

  • Bus routes that stop at every stop
  • Xpresso: express buses with fewer stops and higher fares
  • Nitelink: 24 night bus routes
  • Raillink: two feeder lines to DART train stations
  • Airlink: two feeder lines to Dublin Airport
  • Sightseeing Tours: City tours
