Edward Kevin Daly

Edward Kevin Daly (born December 5, 1933 in Belleek , County Fermanagh , Northern Ireland , † August 8, 2016 in Derry ) was an Irish clergyman and Roman Catholic bishop of Derry .

Life

Edward Daly attended St Columb's College , a boys' high school in Derry. He entered the diocesan seminary and studied philosophy and theology at the Pontifical Irish College in Rome and was ordained a priest on March 16, 1957 . Daly was vicar in Castlederg , County Tyrone ; In 1962 he became vicar at St Eugene's Cathedral in Derry.

1972 was witness to the Daly as Bloody Sunday became known ( "Bloody Sunday") type of attack British soldiers on unarmed demonstrators in Derry. A press photo shows Daly, waving with a white, blood-smeared handkerchief, accompanying the removal of a dying youth - Jackie Duddy. The photo was used as a template for one of the murals in the Bogside district , with which the confrontations are remembered. Britain's Prime Minister David Cameron officially apologized 38 years later for the massacre of the victims' families. Daly has repeatedly campaigned against violence in Northern Ireland and got caught between the fronts of the official British authorities and the IRA .

Pope Paul VI appointed him Bishop of Derry on January 31, 1974. The Archbishop of Armagh , William John Cardinal Conway , ordained him episcopal on March 31 of that year ; Co- consecrators were his predecessor Neil Farren and Archbishop Gaetano Alibrandi , Apostolic Nuncio in Ireland . On October 26, 1993, Pope John Paul II accepted his early resignation after suffering a stroke .

Daly wrote two memoirs, Mister, Are You a Priest? (2000) and A Troubled See: Memoirs of a Derry Bishop (2011). In his second book he openly opposed the obligation to be celibate .
