Belleek

Belleek ( Irish Béal Leice , "estuary of the stone slabs") is a village, which is predominantly in the District of Fermanagh and Omagh of the County of Fermanagh in Northern Ireland ; a small part is also located in the Republic of Ireland in County Donegal . At the 2011 census it had 904 inhabitants.

Belleek has a number of pubs, shops, a hotel and a small inland port. It is known for the porcelain manufactory of the same name.

history

  • The area was probably settled as early as the Neolithic Age.
  • In 1212 a castle was built near the present location at the exit of Lough Erne .
  • During the Plantation of Ulster , Belleek was established in its current form.
  • With the opening of the porcelain factory in 1857, the place grew considerably.
  • Several people died in and around Belleek during the Northern Ireland conflict.

Attractions

The famous porcelain factory was founded in 1857 by John Caldwell Bloomfield. There is a visitor center for those interested.

The Roman Catholic Church and the Protestant Church of Belleek have stained glass windows .

Transport links

Bus Éireann connects Belleek with Enniskillen , Cavan and Dublin and in the other direction with Ballyshannon and Donegal .

From 1868 to 1957 the place was on the route of the Enniskillen and Bundoran Railway . Since the line was closed, the closest train station is in Sligo in the Republic of Ireland with trains to Dublin.

Demographics

The March 27, 2011 census in the United Kingdom found:

  • 20.4% were younger than 17 and 17.3% were older than 64 years
  • 46.0% of the population were men and 54.0% were women
  • 86.8% described themselves as Roman Catholic and 7.4% stated another Christian religion.
  • 26.3% did not have a passport . Of those with passports, 37.1% had a British passport and 61.1% had an Irish passport.

Personalities

  • Edward Daly (1933-2016), Roman Catholic Bishop of Derry (1974-1993), was born in Belleek.

In the vicinity of Belleek on June 30, 1976 the officially highest temperature for Northern Ireland was measured at 30.8 ° C.

The village is the westernmost settlement in Northern Ireland and therefore also in the United Kingdom .
