Bogside

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Bogside is a district outside the historic city walls of Derry , Northern Ireland, inhabited by Irish Republicans and Nationalists . The area was a focal point of many events during the Northern Ireland conflict (the so-called "Troubles") - from the Battle of the Bogside in 1969 to Bloody Sunday in 1972 to the present day.

The eleven large gable murals, known as murals , are tourist attractions that stretch the entire length of Rossville Street and are intended as a tribute to the suffering that had to be endured in the struggle for human rights.

The landmark of the Bogside is the "Free Derry Corner". In January 1969, at the entrance to the district (corner of Lecky Road and Fahan Street), residents of the Bogside wrote the slogan (or the warning to the security forces) “You are now entering Free Derry” on a gable wall. Only the wall with the slogan remains of the former building. Every year the gable wall is repainted and redecorated to suit various occasions - for example, it was painted pink in July 2007 on the occasion of “Foyle Pride Week”. Foyle is the river in Derry.

Equally famous is the Gasyard Feile, an annual music and arts festival.
