Skibbereen ( Irish : An Sciobairín ) is a place in Ireland with 2338 inhabitants (2006) and is called the capital of West Cork . The name means something like small boat harbor . The river Ilen , the course of which runs through the city, flows into the sea in the city of Baltimore .

history

Before 1600, most of the land belonged to the McCarthy clan. To date, McCarthy is the most common name in town.

The great famine between 1845 and 1849 killed around 8,000 to 10,000 people. The victims were buried in family graves in Abbeystrowry Cemetery.

In 1860 the Sisters of Mercy , an order founded by Catherine McAuley in Dublin in 1831, came to Skibbereen, where they stayed until 2003 to support poor children and the sick. The famous architects George Coppinger Ashlin and Edward Welby Pugin built the convent of the sisters .

Freedom fighter Michael Collins had his last meal at the Eldon Hotel in Skibbereen before he was killed in an assassination that same evening.

In 1857 the newspaper Skibbereen Eagle was founded, which was later taken over by the Southern Star , founded in 1889 .

Culture and leisure

Arts Festival

The Skibbereen Arts Festival takes place at the end of July each year. It offers a mix of national and international films, theater, visual arts and music.

Agricultural festival

The Carbery Show takes place on the third Thursday in July each year. It includes agricultural, horticultural, animal, craft and other competitions, as well as a pet show and a trade show. The first Carbery Show took place in 1836.

music

Music events take place in several bars and other parts of the city every year. The 2011 festival took place at the Liss Ard Estate and featured Patti Smith, Echo & the Bunnymen, the Balkan Beat Box, Fred and others in a two-day cast.
