The establishment of the place goes back to an early monastery settlement. The round tower has been preserved from this time .

In 1798 a French landing force under General Humbert landed with 1000 soldiers in the port of Kilcummin, north of Killala. This landing was in support of the United Irishmen uprising . The village itself, like Ballina, was subsequently occupied by the French. The memory of the French invasion is still alive today. So memorial plaques in Kilcummin, Killala and Ballina remind of the incident.
