Ardagh ( Irish : Ardach , older Ardachadh , "high field") is a town in County Longford , Ireland .
Large parts of the city were built as row house settlements in the 19th century and have received several awards for their successful revitalization. B. the Prix d'Honneur of the Entente Florale and victory at the Irish Tidy Towns Competition in 1989, 1996 and 1998.
Ardagh was once the seat of the Diocese of Ardagh ; today it is Longford .
History and mythology
The place is known for some pre-Christian and Christian archaeological sites. St. Patrick of Ireland is said to have built the Church of St. Mel ( Cathedral St. Mel ) in the 5th century and established it as a bishopric. It is an Irish national monument . In Ardagh's Heritage Center an exhibition of historical sites is collected.
Nearby is the hill Brí Léith ("Hill of Gray", Slieve Callory ), which according to Irish mythology is said to have been the seat of the god Midir , as part of the " Other World ".
