Gebhard Halder (born August 17, 1942 in Bregenz ) is an Austrian politician ( ÖVP ) and farmer. Halder was a member of the Vorarlberg state parliament from 1984 to 2009 and its president from 2004 to 2009 .

Gebhard Halder was born on August 17, 1942 as the son of Friedrich and Antonia Halder in a farming family in the Vorarlberg state capital Bregenz. He lost his father at a very young age as a soldier in the Second World War , after which Friedrich Halder was declared missing in 1945. Gebhard Halder attended elementary school in the Bregenz district of Fluh, where his parents' farm was also located, and then completed an apprenticeship as an agricultural master at the Mehrerau agricultural college .

From 1956 Gebhard Halder helped in his parents' farm, which he finally took over completely in 1960 at the age of 18. Until 1980 he was a part-time farmer, during which time he secured additional income as a lift attendant, timber contractor and milk haulier. From 1980 to 2000 Gebhard Halder finally ran his farm as a full-time farmer, before he handed the farm back to his son in 2000. He then worked full-time as a politician until he left state politics in 2009.

Political career

Gebhard Halder made his entry into politics in the 1960s as a member of the Austrian Farmers' Union , a party organization of the ÖVP, in the Bregenz-Fluh local group. In 1964 he became chairman of this local farmers' union, which he remained until 1995. In 1976 Halder became a member of the State Farmers Council, which is a body of the Vorarlberg Chamber of Agriculture . In 1981 he was elected Chamber Councilor and President of the Vorarlberg Chamber of Agriculture, which he was until 1999. From 1986 to 1993 he was also chairman of the Vorarlberger Bauernbund.

In 1975, Gebhard Halder was elected to the Bregenz city ​​council as a representative of the ÖVP, where he remained a full member until 1985. From 1985 to 1995 he was a substitute member of the Bregenz city council.

On November 28, 1984, Gebhard Halder was sworn in for the first time as a member of the Vorarlberg state parliament after the 1984 state elections . From October 7, 1999 to January 29, 2003 he was club chairman of the ÖVP parliamentary group in the subsequent legislative periods. On the day he left the function of club chairman, he was elected 2nd Vice President of the State Parliament. On October 5, 2004, Halder was elected President of the Vorarlberg State Parliament and thus a deputy member of the Committee of the Regions of Europe and a member of the Standing Committee of the Conference of Legislative Regional Assemblies of Europe. After the state elections in Vorarlberg in 2009 , Halder retired as president of the state parliament. His previous deputy and party colleague Bernadette Mennel was elected as his successor as President of the State Parliament.

Private life

Gebhard Halder lives in Bregenz-Fluh , has been married since 1971 and has two children.
