The Rural School and Education Center for Vorarlberg ( BSBZ ) is an agricultural and forestry technical school in the Austrian city of Hohenems for the state of Vorarlberg . As the central training center for agriculture in Vorarlberg, the school is a state institution and is therefore subordinate to the education department of the Vorarlberg state government . Optionally, the students of the BSBZ Hohenems can live for a fee in the connected boarding school during the school year, while attending school is free. As an agricultural practice facility, the school is connected to numerous properties as well as the Rheinhof, an agricultural enterprise.

Subjects

In the agricultural college, students can choose between three subjects. On the one hand there is a three- or four-level specialization in agriculture and agricultural maintenance . After attending school for three years, the pupils receive the agricultural worker certificate . In addition, the driving license for driving license class F tractors is acquired as part of school lessons . With the completion of the four-year training at the BSBZ, the students acquire the special qualification landscape conservation. There are also several compulsory internships that students have to complete during their school visit.

The second specialization is rural housekeeping and takes a total of 3 years. As in the field of agriculture and agricultural maintenance, after three years graduates have the opportunity to take the skilled worker examination for rural housekeeping.

As a third subject, a combination of the two other subject areas is available for working people. This is called the field of agriculture and rural housekeeping for working people . The lessons are completed within two years on evenings and Saturdays, whereby the skilled worker examination can also be taken after a positive school leaving certificate.

From the 2015/2016 school year, training will be offered within the framework of a higher education institution for agriculture with a high school diploma.

School history

In 1920 the first agricultural college in Vorarlberg was founded in the Mehrerau monastery in Bregenz , where a new school building was built in 1931. Schooling for the daughters of farmers, on the other hand, was not started until 1935 in Gauenstein Monastery. After the Second World War and the time of National Socialism in Austria , monks and nuns were again entrusted with running the agricultural schools. In the 1970s, the construction of the “Agricultural Technical and Vocational School” in Hohenems began at its current location.

In 1974 the agricultural school in Bregenz was finally closed and the school in Hohenems continued. In 1987 a modern extension was built, which was put into operation a year later and made the school one of the most modern technical schools in Austria at the time. In the same year, the Rheinhof farm in the immediate vicinity was leased by the city of Hohenems, which was then run by the school. With the new school concept drawn up in 1995 and approved by the Vorarlberg state government in 1996, the Hohenems Agricultural School was merged with the Gauenstein School in Schruns in the Montafon , whereupon in 1997 the name was changed to the current name “Rural School and Education Center”. In 2003 the Rheinhof was bought and organizationally integrated into the school. The following year brought a general renovation of the existing premises as well as the construction of the workshop wing and the expansion of the classrooms.

On October 13, 2005, a major fire destroyed the main building of the Rheinhof. A little more than a year later, on October 25, 2006, a new, modern stable building as well as the workshop wing of the school, which was newly built in the course of the previous year, went into operation.
