Life

Friday is the son of a police officer. From 1961 he studied mathematics, physics and astronomy at the Ruprecht-Karls-Universität Heidelberg , where he graduated as a mathematician in 1964 and received his doctorate in 1966 under Hans Maaß (and Albrecht Dold ) (with the dissertation second degree modular forms on rational and Gaussian number body , meeting reports Heidelberger Akad.Wiss. 1967). From 1964 he was an assistant at the Mathematical Institute in Heidelberg, where he completed his habilitation at the end of 1969 and was then a dietician and, from 1970, a scientific adviser. In 1970/71 he was visiting professor at the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University in Frankfurt am Main . In 1973 he became a full professor at the Johannes Gutenberg University in Mainz , after having turned down an offer to Regensburg in 1972. In 1977 he became a full professor in Heidelberg, having previously refused an offer to Bielefeld. From 1991 to 1993 he was dean of the mathematics faculty.

Freitag deals primarily (like his teacher Maaß) with the theory of modular forms , but uses an approach via algebraic geometry . He described this theory among other things in two monographs in the basic teachings of the mathematical sciences of the Springer publishing house. These books as well as the first volume of his function theory series are used as standard references in the respective specialist area. In 1974 he gave a lecture on singularities of modular manifolds and bodies of automorphic functions at the ICM in Vancouver as "Invited Speaker" . In 1998, together with Rainer Weissauer and Richard Borcherds , he was able to prove the existence of a tip shape from weight 12 to sex 12, which they constructed from the theta series of certain 24-dimensional lattices ( Niemeier lattice , e.g. Leech lattice ).
