Gerold Ratz

Gerold Ratz (born July 29, 1919 in Dornbirn ; † March 9, 2006 in Bregenz ) was an Austrian state politician ( ÖVP ) from the state of Vorarlberg . Ratz was a member of the Vorarlberg regional government from 1959 to 1963 as a regional councilor and then until 1973 as regional governor .

After Gerold Ratz was born in Dornbirn, his family moved to the state capital Bregenz in autumn 1919, where he subsequently attended elementary school and grammar school. Shortly after finishing school, Ratz was first drafted into the Reich Labor Service and then into the Wehrmacht . During the Second World War , Gerold Ratz was used both in the western campaign and on the eastern front, where he was seriously wounded.

On his return he began to study law at the University of Innsbruck , where he received his doctorate in 1948 . He then completed his legal practice in Vorarlberg and joined the Vorarlberg regional service as a lawyer in 1949. In October 1959, Gerold Ratz was elected for the first time for the ÖVP in the Vorarlberg state parliament, and in the same month he was elected as a regional councilor in the state government. As a regional councilor, he was responsible for the legislative, police, home affairs, housing subsidy and traffic law departments.

In December 1963, Ratz finally took over the office of Deputy Governor, known in Vorarlberg as Provincial Governor, from his party colleague Eduard Ulmer, who was leaving office for health reasons . For health reasons, Gerold Ratz resigned all political offices on September 12, 1973 and returned to the state service in 1974 as a member of Group I as a civil servant. For his services to the state of Vorarlberg, he was awarded the gold medal of honor of the state of Vorarlberg in 1975 , the highest award of the Vorarlberg state government. On December 31, 1979, Dr. Ratz finally retired. Gerold Ratz was the father of the President of the Supreme Court Eckart Ratz .
