Typical facility in a HWI class

The commercial academies for business informatics (Digital Business (DB) or HWI) are a pilot project supported by the Austrian Ministry of Education and the European Social Fund , which started at the beginning of the 2001 school year. In general, this describes a specialty of the commercial academy that is run as a notebook class and whose classrooms have special equipment (projector, printer, file server, network connections ...).

There is only one HWI class per year and location, in which 30 students can be admitted (in the 2016/2017 school year two HWI classes for the first time at the Bregenz location). At the moment the ratio of registrations to admission places is around 3: 1 (there are 90 applicants for 30 places). The HWI or DB-HAK concludes after 5 years like the normal HAK with the maturity and diploma examination certificate ( Matura ), in addition, a project work in the economic or IT area must be completed.

The teaching focus is on the subjects of programming, network technology and business informatics . In the 2005/06 school year, the first HWI classes passed their school-leaving exams at all Austrian locations.

Special teaching focuses

  • Operating systems and network management (BUN): 3rd - 4th year
  • Internet, multimedia and content management (IM): from the 1st year
  • E-business and e-business center (practice firm): from the 3rd year
  • Applied programming (ANP): 1st - 3rd year
  • Software development, project management and project work: from the 3rd year

In addition, the notebook is used in all subjects. Sometimes only as a staple replacement, but z. B. also teaches mathematics with the help of the software Mathematica and the calculator program TI InterActive, or in other subjects with the help of the Internet (whereby Wikipedia also plays a not insignificant role).

In order to obtain the broadest possible education, open source software is also used in addition to Microsoft programs ( Linux , OpenOffice.org etc.). This is supported by the operating systems and network management department based on Linux.

In addition, there are the usual subjects of the HAK, although the number of hours of general education subjects ( geography , biology , history , physics , chemistry ), commercial subjects ( accounting , business administration ) and languages (little English , no second foreign language) are compared to the standard HAK has been significantly reduced.
