The Handelsakademie ( HAK for short, also Bundes Handelsakademie , BHAK for short ) is a vocational college in the Völkermarkter Vorstadt in Klagenfurt . The HAK 1 International Klagenfurt is one of the largest schools in Austria. It offers space for around 1,700 students. The HAK also offers classes in Slovene .

The HAK 1 Klagenfurt is one of 27 COOL impulse schools in Austria, it also houses a non-commercial radio station (school radio).

history

The school was founded on October 1, 1895 in the form of a communal commercial school for boys in a building on Völkermarkter Ring 14. The communal commercial school was granted public rights on March 15, 1898 by the k. k. Ministry of Cult and Education.

Due to the military confiscation of the building, the school had to partially relocate to the municipal “Valerie-Infirmary” in Kumpfgasse in 1915 - today's main building of HAK I. The complete move took place in 1935/36.

With the school year 1907/08 the school was expanded to include girls' classes. A higher commercial school was established in 1918/19, with the higher commercial school being renamed the commercial academy on March 3, 1920, and the commercial school being renamed the commercial business school in 1934.

When Austria was annexed to Germany in 1938, the commercial academy became a business school, and from 1945 it became a commercial academy again.

On September 1, 1964, the city of Klagenfurt handed over the commercial academy and commercial school to the federal government , which thus became the school sponsor and the school became a federal school.

With the school year 1964/65 the school was divided into BHAK and BHAS for boys and BHAK and BHAS for girls. At the beginning of the 1973/74 school year, coeducational teaching was introduced, at the same time the girls' school was renamed the Federal Commercial Academy and Federal Commercial School I and that of the boys the Federal Commercial Academy and Federal Commercial School II.

A new HAK II building was erected from 1982 to 1985, and the listed building of HAK I was renovated from 1989 to 1992 .

The merging of the two HAKs began in 2009/10 and was completed in the 2013/14 school year, since then there has only been the Federal Commercial Academy and Federal Commercial School 1 International Klagenfurt .
