Emil Breisach

Emil Breisach (born March 21, 1923 in Stockerau , Lower Austria ; † January 9, 2015 in Graz , Styria ) was an Austrian writer , cultural manager and broadcasting director . In addition, Breisach was a long-term sponsor and supporter of the Styrian cultural scene and was an initiator of cultural festivals for modern art several times .

Life

Emil Breisach was the son of a career officer who had given him on the way: “Don't go to the military, this is a job in which you always have to obey!” In 1932, at the age of nine, he came from Stockerau to Graz . During World War II he was deployed on several fronts from February 1941 until he was captured in 1945. From 1945 to 1950 he studied art history, sociology, philosophy and psychology at the Karl Franzens University in Graz . From November 1945 he worked as a speaker and from 1946 as head of the entertainment and cabaret department at the Alpenland broadcasting group (Radio Graz). He was involved in the student board of the Graz university studio as a copywriter and actor. He later wrote texts for the cabaret ensembles Treffpunkt Orpheum , Forum-Zoo and Die Tellerwäscher . From 1958 to 1967 Breisach was President of the Forum Stadtpark . He was one of the co-founders of the festival for contemporary art steirischer herbst . In 1968 he founded the Musikprotokoll , a festival of new music , and the literature symposium with Peter Vujica .

From 1967 until his retirement in 1988 he was regional director of the ORF regional studio in Styria and initiated the Austrian sculpture park with the open-air gallery sculptures in the park at the ORF studio . During his directorship he promoted the regionalization of the regional studios of the ORF, whereby he also "transformed the Styrian regional studio into a unique cultural creative workshop". From 1971 to 1987 he held a lectureship in media studies at the University of Graz . On August 12, 1987 he founded the Graz Academy and was its president until 2006. In 1994 he founded the Graz Academy Literature Prize   and in 1998 he and others founded the La Strada International Street and Puppet Theater Festival . In 2003 he was one of the organizers of the Styrian Modernism exhibition at Rabenstein Castle . He also participated in the planning of Graz as European Capital of Culture 2003.

Emil Breisach left four sons and a daughter, including the pediatrician Georg Breisach, the congress manager Nikolaus Breisach and the film producer and director Felix Breisach . He was buried in the Protestant cemetery of St. Peter in the presence of numerous artists and politicians .
