Ludwig Boltzmann Institute for Research on the Consequences of War

The Ludwig Boltzmann Institute for War Impact Research (BIK) was founded in 1993 by Stefan Karner , who also headed it until February 2018. At the beginning of March 2018, Barbara Stelzl-Marx took over the management of the institute. The BIK is based in Graz and has branches in Vienna and Raabs an der Thaya . There are currently 11 employees at the institute.

The Institute

The BIK is an institute of the Ludwig Boltzmann Society and researches the political, economic, societal, humanitarian and cultural consequences of wars and conflicts. In addition to research, the communication of research results is another important part of the work at the institute. That is why the BIK organizes numerous scientific events every year and is involved in the design of large exhibitions. In addition, the Ludwig Boltzmann Institute for War Impact Research supports relatives in researching prisoners of war, missing persons and forced laborers from the Second World War.

Research priorities

When it was founded in 1993, the main focus was on research on Austrian prisoners of war in the former Soviet Union . Since then, numerous research priorities have been added.

These include the following five program lines:

4. Totalitarian systems

5. Remembering, commemorating, digitizing
